Job Duties and Requirements
Definition: Under general supervision, to direct and assist the public in seeking planning and building services, preliminarily assessing customer needs, reviewing submitted materials, answering questions, providing education and routing customers to planning or other appropriate agency professionals; and, to perform related duties as required.
Distinguishing Features: This is a journey level classification. Incumbents work within a framework of established procedures and must possess a broad knowledge of planning, building and environmental quality permitting and application requirements. Incumbents are expected to perform their duties with only occasional instruction or assistance, provide a high level of problem solving and customer service, and answer a variety of planning, building, septic and code enforcement questions from the public. Incumbents screen customer issues, identify their needs and refer those questions that are better answered by an appropriate planning or building professional.
Examples Of Essential Position Duties:
The following duties represent the principal job duties, however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Provide initial customer contact; assist developers, contractors and property owners with planning, building and septic permits and questions; provide education to the public regarding the planning and building process.
• Determine customer needs and goals based on submitted information and inquiries to the customer. Answer a variety of questions regarding the planning and building process when appropriate and route technical questions to planning and building professionals.
• Identify and provide appropriate application forms; review select building and septic application forms for completeness.
• Assist customers with issuance of permits including building, electrical, mechanical, sanitation and planning.
• Assist customers with routine zoning authorization and the scheduling of appointments with other staff.
• Research computer files for planning, building, environmental quality and code enforcement information to determine the best process and utilization of staff.
• Receive and review Land Use Compatibility Statements and business license applications. Provide appropriate information regarding land use compatibility and determine whether further County action is required.
• Compute square footage, lot size, and percent of improvements for soil types.
• Assess variety of data from multiple sources such as maps, manuals and diagrams.
• Make recommendations and prioritize projects within applicable time frames.
• Assist with paperwork processing, filing and data entry.
